You don’t need to be a computer genius or have a degree in IT to know how to buy a new desktop. There are some simple things you can do before making your purchase that will help you get the best value for your money and better understand what you’re buying.

Define Your Needs

When you start to look for a computer, it’s important to know what kind of computer you need. Do you want a desktop for work or something to complete school assignments? Are you looking for a machine to keep up with internet browsing? Or are you looking for an entertainment system that will let you play games, watch movies and listen to music?

Once you know what you want to use it for, you can begin looking at specifications and prices.

Know Your Specs

There are three main things to consider when looking at computer specifications: Processor, graphics card, and storage.

Once you’ve bought everything for your desktop, don’t forget to buy some extra accessories.

  • Monitor – It’s important to make sure you have sufficient screen space for your computer. The most typical monitor size is 24″, but there are smaller or bigger options if you’re working with a tight space.
  • Keyboard & Mouse – They are very important especially if you are a gamer.
  • Speakers – If you’re looking for better sound quality, look for speakers with a subwoofer and virtual surround-sound technology.
  • Headphones – If you don’t want to disturb others while listening to music, look for a decent headset with a microphone.
